Osimhen, Troost-Ekong, others join Ndidi at Maracana children’s fest in Ajegunle
Ndidi stated the choice of Maracana Stadium was purposeful due to its legacy in producing Nigerian football stars.
Some Super Eagles players on Saturday attended the 2025 Maracana Children’s Fest, held in honour of their colleague, Wilfred Ndidi. The event, sponsored by Leicester City midfielder Ndidi, took place at the refurbished Maracana Arena in Tolu, Ajegunle, Lagos.
Super Eagles stand-in captain William Troost-Ekong and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen were among the top players who graced the event, attended by a minimum of 3,000 children. Other notable attendees included Frank Onyeka of FC Augsburg, Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen, Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge, and ex-international Jonathan Akpoborie.
The children displayed their football skills across 19 five-a-side pitches, entertaining both visitors and spectators at the stadium. The atmosphere reached a crescendo when Osimhen, former African Footballer of the Year and Turkish League top scorer, made his grand entrance. The kids joyfully shouted Osimhen’s name, thrilled by the rare opportunity to meet him in person.
Speaking at the event, Ndidi expressed appreciation for the chance to give back to the community where his football journey began. He emphasized the importance of inspiring and nurturing young talent through such initiatives.
The presence of Super Eagles players at Maracana Arena symbolizes their support for grassroots football development and community engagement. The event, which featured multiple pitches hosting over 3,000 children simultaneously, showcased the players’ commitment to empowering the next generation of football stars.
Programme organizer, Yemi Idowu, lauded the players’ dedication and highlighted the significance of their involvement in inspiring the youth. He noted the positive impact of such interactions on both the children and the community.
Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), Oladotun Coker, commended the event for promoting grassroots football development and providing a memorable experience for the young participants.
