Abbott calls Starmer’s immigration comments ‘basically racist’ at rally
Thousands of trade advocates, activists, and unionists gathered to ‘send a message’ to the Government at a rally in central London.
The Prime Minister warned of the UK becoming ‘an island of strangers’ when he outlined plans for stricter immigration controls in a recent speech, sparking mixed reactions across different parties. Addressing the demonstrators in Whitehall, Ms. Abbott, who was previously suspended by Labour in 2023 but allowed to run in the last year’s general election, emphasized the global struggle against the wealthy, powerful, and racists, even within her own party. Nigel Farage, leader of Reform, expressed his party’s strong approval of Sir Keir’s speech, suggesting he was learning significantly from them.
Signs at the rally included messages like ‘Nurses not nukes’ and ‘Cut war, not welfare’. The People’s Assembly highlighted the unity of trade unionists, health, disability, housing, and welfare advocates with community organizations under the banner ‘No to Austerity2.0’.
