Mixed Reactions Surrounding the Launch of Enugu Air
The Enugu State Government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, recently unveiled Enugu Air, marking the state as the second in Nigeria and the first in South East Nigeria to own an airline. This move follows the establishment of Ibom Airline in June 2019, which is fully owned by Akwa Ibom State.
While some view this initiative as a positive step towards diversifying the state’s economy and reducing its reliance on federal allocations, others have expressed mixed reactions.
One perspective is that the launch of Enugu Air could enhance the state’s revenue base, potentially decreasing its dependence on federal funding. This, in turn, could lead to increased investment in infrastructure and greater economic self-sufficiency. Advocates of this view emphasize the importance of protecting state enterprises from political interference to ensure their long-term success and contribution to the state’s economy.
Looking ahead, it is hoped that future administrations in Enugu will continue to support and nurture the growth of state-owned businesses for the overall benefit of the state’s economy.
