Orphaned and injured wildlife in Ottawa receive record food donation
Black bears, wolves, coyotes, raccoons, possums, and foxes are just some of the animals in the care of wildlife centres in Thunder Bay, Huntsville, Barrie, Ottawa, Kingston, Hamilton, and London. With big mouths to feed, these centres are struggling to make ends meet.
Earlier this month, wildlife centres throughout the province received a record-breaking food donation to help with the increasing pressures of taking care of a larger number of animals. Sandy Donaldson, director of Ontario Wildlife Centre, highlighted the challenges faced by the centres due to the rising number of injured and orphaned wild animals in Ontario, attributed to the decrease in natural environments and urban sprawl. The centre received 69 skids, or over 21,000 kg, of dry dog food to feed the animals in need.
Dry dog food serves as a valuable source of nutrition for many mammals in their care, often mixed with water to ensure adequate hydration.
Wildlife centres heavily rely on contributions to support their animals.
