Russia Busts Truck-Based Crypto Mine Stealing Village Power
The authorities in Russia’s Republic of Buryatia have discovered a secret cryptocurrency mining operation concealed inside a KamAZ truck. The mobile setup was stealing power from a high-voltage line serving a nearby town, emphasizing the growing issue of illicit crypto mining in the area. Energy workers found 95 mining rigs and a transformer substation in the truck, strong enough to power a small village. This incident marks the sixth case of crypto miners illegally consuming electricity in Buryatia this year. The criminals connected the truck to the electrical grid without authorization and fled the scene before being apprehended. This unauthorized mining activity poses risks to the energy system, causing power quality issues and potential blackouts.
To address the rampant illegal mining, new laws have been introduced to tighten crypto mining regulations in Russia. The Ministry of Energy proposed establishing a national registry of mining devices to ensure compliance with the law and minimize unlawful activities. President Vladimir Putin has shown support for the crypto mining industry, attributing Russia’s success in bitcoin mining to the country’s surplus energy, especially in Siberia. However, the government has restricted mining activities in vulnerable regions to maintain energy stability.
While crypto mining remains popular in Russia, illegal mining is under increasing scrutiny. The recent discovery of the truck-based crypto mine highlights the need for stricter enforcement, particularly in energy-constrained areas.
