Coinbase and Gemini Eyeing Numerous EU MiCA Licenses: Report
Leading crypto trading platforms Coinbase and Gemini are seeking additional licenses under the MiCA framework in the EU to expand their presence. According to Reuters, the Winklevoss twin brothers, Tyler and Cameron, are expected to secure a license from Malta, the smallest country in Europe. ZBD, a prominent payment company, was the first to receive MiCA approval from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) in December 2024. Gemini and Coinbase are positioned to obtain EU-wide licenses under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulations, as reported by Reuters.
At the close of 2024, the MiCA regulation was introduced in the EU with a specific emphasis on stablecoins. Boerse Stuttgart Digital recently expanded its brokerage and exchange services with a MiCA license from BaFin in Germany. Similarly, Bitpanda secured the MiCA license from the German regulator in January. There are concerns regarding the pace and thoroughness of MiCA license approvals, highlighting the importance of regulatory compliance in the cryptocurrency sector.
